But first, let’s talk a little bit about the criminal justice degrees and majors offered along with the advantages of attending school online.
Criminal Justice Degrees near Lake Montezuma AZ
Just like with most other professions, criminal justice degrees are becoming more frequently required for various positions in the field. And as the level of education and degree earned increases, so increases the job opportunities to choose from in Lake Montezuma AZ. There are four degree levels available, starting with the Associate Degree in criminal justice. Generally a two year degree, it provides an overview of such specialties as corrections, law enforcement and the judiciary system. An increasing number of police departments are seeking applicants with at least an Associate Degree. The four year Bachelor’s Degree usually covers the same subjects as the Associate Degree, just more in depth. The more comprehensive education makes available additional opportunities for such positions as FBI agents, probation officers or intelligence analysits. Progressing to a Master’s Degree can take an additional 2 years of classes after attaining the Bachelor’s Degree. The Master’s Degree allows students to become experts in a specific facet of criminal justice. Along with the options afforded with the lesser degrees, graduates may also become instructors, social caseworkers or court officers. And last, for those with an interest in research or teaching at the college level, the Doctoral Degree or PhD is offered also. Generally taking anywhere from four to seven years to complete, it is a far more rigorous version of the Master’s program. Naturally the time requirements for attaining any one of the four degrees will depend on the credit load carried by the student.
Available Criminal Justice Majors
There are numerous specialties to select from when considering which major to pursue for your criminal justice degree. Maybe CSI has always fascinated you after viewing countless episodes of the various crime scene investigation TV programs. Or maybe you have always dreamed of being a law enforcement officer, or even an FBI agent. No matter what your career goal, you need to select a degree and a major in criminal justice that will ready and qualify you for that position. Choosing a program and a school that specializes in that specialty would naturally be the ideal option toward that end. Possibly you have not yet decided on a specialty or a career focus yet. In that scenario, it would be a good idea to explore all of the degree options available from the numerous colleges and universities. Below is a partial list of criminal justice degree majors offered in the Lake Montezuma AZ area:
- Law enforcement
- Homeland security
- Forensic science
- Social Work
- Crime scene investigation
- Pre-law Studies
- Police science
Prior to enrolling in the school you have decided on, investigate the degree program you have an interest in as well as the college. Just because a criminal justice school is accredited and has an excellent reputation in general does not guarantee that all of its specialty programs are equally highly regarded. That’s why it is extremely important to decide on a major first before choosing a college to enroll in.
Criminal Justice Online Classes
A number of students may not have access to a criminal justice degree college in their region, or they might just prefer the convenience of earning a degree online. In either case, they will find that there are accredited online options available. There are numerous schools domiciled within the USA that offer degree programs online similar to those offered on campus. And for a number of Lake Montezuma AZ students, particularly those who continue to work part or full-time while attending college, the accessibility and convenience of online programs in many cases make them the sole option. And as an added advantage, online colleges are frequently lower in cost than traditional alternatives. Tuition may be cheaper and expenses for such things as commuting and study materials may be eliminated or reduced as well. Just make sure, as with any school you are considering, that the program you choose is accredited by a recognized organization, such as the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (more on accreditation later). But if you are motivated, and can study in this type of independent setting, then obtaining your degree online may be the right option for you.
Questions to Ask Criminal Justice Schools
At this point you have no doubt come to a decision on a criminal justice degree program and a major, including if you want to earn your degree online or by attending classes on-campus. Having made those decisions, it’s time to begin looking for Lake Montezuma AZ area colleges and narrowing down your options. Since there are a large number of colleges to select from, literally hundreds within the USA alone, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifying questions to ask when analyzing colleges. Obviously cost is an important consideration and you will need to enroll in a college that is within your academic budget. And we have already mentioned several others as well, including accreditation, reputation and location. To help you focus on those issues and more, following is a list of questions you might want to ask the colleges you are considering before making your ultimate decision.
Is the Criminal Justice School Accredited? Many criminal justice colleges have acquired one or more accreditations from regional or national agencies. One of the most highly regarded is the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). Schools and programs that have been accredited by the ACJS have gone through an extensive assessment of their course of instruction and teachers. It’s imperative to confirm that the degree program and college you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency for several reasons. In addition to helping confirm that you obtain a quality education, it will also aid in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many Lake Montezuma AZ employers are looking for graduates of schools that are accredited with good reputations.
What is the Program’s Reputation? As stated previously, along with accreditation the reputation of the school you choose is important as well. It’s especially crucial if you are entering the profession with no relevant previous employment history. Without any previous experience, Lake Montezuma AZ employers will be evaluating the quality of your education as a primary factor when reviewing your resume. There are several school rating organizations where you can find college reviews and rankings, such as U.S. News and World Report. They look at the quality of the course of instruction, the reputation of the instructors and other factors contributing to the academic programs. Keep in mind that a school with an overall less than excellent reputation could still be well regarded for a specific degree program that you might have an interest in.
Is Job Placement Assistance Offered? Find out what the graduation rates are for the Lake Montezuma AZ schools you are considering. A lower percentage may be an indicator that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out, or that the instructors were not up to the task of teaching the curriculum. It’s also essential that the colleges have job placement programs with high placement rates. A job assistance program will help you get that first crucial job after graduation that denotes the starting point of your career in criminal justice. A high placement rate will not only help confirm that the college has a good reputation within the field, but that it also has a sizable network of employers to help students in obtaining jobs upon graduation.
How Far Away are the Campuses Located? As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, one of the initial things you will probably look at when searching for criminal justice colleges is the location of the schools. Unless you have determined that you will move or possibly board on campus, the school you choose will have to be within driving distance of your Lake Montezuma AZ residence. Of course attending online classes will eliminate the need for travel and make location a non-issue. Something to keep in mind is that if you opt to go to a school not in your state of residence, you could be required to pay a higher tuition than resident students, particularly for state colleges and universities. Community colleges also often charge students higher fees if their residence is outside of the state or school district.
How Large are the Classrooms? Unless you prefer to disappear in the crowd, attending smaller classes offers the opportunity for more interaction with the teachers. Bigger classes provide little chance of receiving individualized instruction if needed. One way to assess the interaction between faculty and students is to sit in on a few classes prior to making your final determination. Talk to several of the students and ask what they have experienced. Also, talk to the instructors and ask them what their teaching approaches are. You may also want to ask what their backgrounds have been in the Arizona criminal justice field.
Are Classes Available as Needed? And last, it’s crucial to confirm that the final program you choose provides classes at times that will accommodate your busy schedule. This is particularly true if you choose to still work while attending school. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Lake Montezuma AZ, check that they are available at those times. Also, if you can only attend on a part-time basis, confirm it is an option also. And ask what the make-up protocol is should you have to miss any classes as a result of illness or emergencies.

Wales Arnold, the first settler along Beaver Creek, came to Beaver Creek in 1870 and lived at what became known as The Montezuma Well Ranch. The part of the community known as McGuireville began in 1910 when Eugene McGuire settled near the confluence of Dry Beaver Creek and Wet Beaver Creek. This was also at the junction of the historic road from Stoneman Lake which split there with one route going on to Cornville, Cottonwood and Jerome and the other going south to Camp Verde and on to Prescott via Copper Canyon or Cherry. Eugene McGuire along with his son Gene homesteaded there beginning in 1910. Their small store and gas station was supplanted by another store operated by Midge Montgomery who started Beaver Creek Store there in 1931.
