Available Criminal Justice Degrees near Casa Grande AZ
Just like with most other professions, criminal justice degrees are becoming more commonly needed for various positions in the field. And as the level of education and degree earned advances, so increases the employment opportunities to choose from in Casa Grande AZ. There are 4 degree levels offered, starting with the Associate Degree in criminal justice. Usually a two year degree, it provides an overview of such specialties as corrections, law enforcement and the judicial court system. More and more police departments are seeking candidates with no less than an Associate Degree. The 4 year Bachelor’s Degree normally addresses the same topics as the Associate Degree, just more in depth. The more expansive education makes available more options for such professions as FBI agents, probation officers or intelligence analysits. Advancing to a Master’s Degree can take an additional 2 years of classes in addition to earning the Bachelor’s Degree. The Master’s Degree enables students to become experts in a specific area of criminal justice. Along with the opportunities afforded with the lesser degrees, graduates can also become instructors, social caseworkers or court officers. And finally, for individuals with an interest in research or teaching at the college level, the PhD or Doctoral Degree is available also. Generally requiring anywhere from four to seven years to complete, it is a far more rigorous version of the Master’s program. Of course the time requirements for attaining any of the four degrees will be dependent on the credit load carried by the student.
Criminal Justice Majors
There are a number of specializations to select from when deciding which major to elect for your criminal justice degree. Perhaps CSI has always interested you after watching numerous episodes of the various crime scene investigation TV programs. Or maybe you have always dreamed of being a police officer, or even an FBI agent. No matter what your career goal, you must select a major and a degree in criminal justice that will ready and qualify you for that job. Selecting a school and program that specializes in that area would certainly be the ideal option toward that end. Possibly you have not yet decided on a specialty or a career focus yet. In that case, it would be best to investigate all of the degree options available from the numerous colleges and universities. Below is a partial list of criminal justice degree majors offered in the Casa Grande AZ area:
- Law enforcement
- Homeland security
- Forensic science
- Social Work
- Crime scene investigation
- Pre-law Studies
- Police science
Before enrolling in the program you have chosen, research the degree program you are interested in as well as the school. Just because a criminal justice school is accredited and has an excellent reputation in general does not indicate that all of its specialty programs are equally highly regarded. That’s why it is very important to decide on a major first prior to picking a college to enroll in.
Criminal Justice Classes Online
Some prospective students might not have access to a criminal justice degree program in their region, or they might just prefer the convenience of earning a degree online. Regardless of the reason, they will discover that there are accredited online options available. There are numerous colleges domiciled within the United States that provide degree programs online similar to those offered on campus. And for a number of Casa Grande AZ students, particularly those who continue working part or full-time while attending college, the accessibility and convenience of online schools may make them the sole option. And as an additional benefit, online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Tuition can be cheaper and costs for such things as commuting and study materials may be reduced or eliminated as well. Just make sure, just like for any college you are reviewing, that the program you choose is accredited by an acknowledged agency, such as the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (more on accreditation later). But if you are disciplined, and can study in this kind of unsupervised environment, then earning your degree online may be the right option for you.
Concerns to Ask Criminal Justice Programs
By now you have no doubt come to a decision on a criminal justice degree program and a major, including if you want to earn your degree online or by attending classes on-campus. Having made those decisions, it’s time to start looking for Casa Grande AZ area schools and fine tuning your options. Because there are a large number of schools to select from, literally hundreds within the United States alone, it’s important to have a list of qualifying questions to utilize when evaluating colleges. Clearly cost is a significant factor and you will need to pick a program that is within your scholastic budget. And we have already pointed out several others as well, including accreditation, reputation and location. To help you address those concerns and more, below is a list of questions you may wish to ask the colleges you are examining prior to making your final decision.
Is the Criminal Justice School Accredited? Numerous criminal justice schools have earned one or more accreditations from national or regional organizations. Among the most respected is the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). Schools and programs that have been accredited by the ACJS have undergone an extensive assessment of their course of instruction and teachers. It’s essential to make sure that the program and college you pick are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization for a number of reasons. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a top notch education, it will also aid in qualifying for student loans or financial aid, which are often not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. Also, a number of Casa Grande AZ employers prefer graduates of colleges that are accredited with good reputations.
What is the Program’s Reputation? As mentioned previously, in conjunction with accreditation the reputation of the school you enroll in is important also. It’s especially critical if you are going into the profession with no relevant prior job history. Without any prior experience, Casa Grande AZ employers will be considering the quality of your education as a key factor when reviewing your resume. There are several college rating organizations where you can find college reviews and rankings, including U.S. News and World Report. They look at the quality of the course of instruction, the reputation of the teachers and other elements contributing to the educational programs. Remember that a school with an overall less than excellent reputation may still be highly respected for a particular degree program that you may be interested in.
Is Job Assistance Provided? Find out what the graduation rates are for the Casa Grande AZ schools you are considering. A low rate may be an indicator that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out, or that the instructors were not capable of teaching the curriculum. It’s also essential that the colleges have job assistance programs with high placement rates. A job placement program will help you land that first pivotal job after graduation that denotes the starting point of your career in criminal justice. A high placement rate will not only help confirm that the college has a good reputation within the industry, but that it also has a substantial network of employers to help students in obtaining jobs upon graduation.
How Far Away are the Campuses Located? As we touched on at the beginning of this article, among the initial things you will probably consider when looking for criminal justice colleges is the location of the schools. Unless you have determined that you will relocate or possibly board on campus, the school you choose will need to be within commuting distance of your Casa Grande AZ residence. Of course attending online classes will eliminate the necessity for travel and make location a moot issue. Something to bear in mind is that if you opt to attend a college outside of your state of residence, you may be charged a higher tuition than resident students, particularly for state universities and colleges. Junior and community colleges also usually charge students higher fees if they reside outside of the state or school district.
How Large are the Classrooms? Unless you like to get lost in the crowd, going to smaller classes provides the opportunity for more interaction with the instructors. Bigger classes provide little chance of receiving individualized instruction if needed. One means to evaluate the interaction between faculty and students is to monitor a few classes prior to making your final decision. Talk to some of the students and find out what their experiences have been. Also, talk to the instructors and inquire what their teaching approaches are. You may also want to ask what their backgrounds have been in the Arizona criminal justice field.
Are Class Times Compatible With Your Schedule? And last, it’s important to confirm that the ultimate program you select offers classes at times that will accommodate your busy lifestyle. This is particularly true if you decide to continue working while going to college. If you need to attend classes at night or on weekends near Casa Grande AZ, make sure they are offered at those times. Additionally, if you can only attend part-time, verify it is an option also. And ask what the make-up policy is should you have to miss any classes because of emergencies or illness.

Casa Grande, Arizona
Casa Grande (O'odham: Wainom Wo:g) is a city in Pinal County, approximately halfway between Phoenix and Tucson in the U.S. state of Arizona. According to U.S. Census estimates, the population of the city is 55,477 as of 2017. It is named after the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, which is actually located in Coolidge. "Casa Grande" is Spanish for "big house". Among resident English speakers, there is no consensus on how to pronounce the city’s name.
Casa Grande was founded in 1879 during the Arizona mining boom, specifically due to the presence of the Southern Pacific Railroad. In January 1880, the community of Terminus, meaning "end-of-the-line," was established despite consisting of just five residents and three buildings. In September 1880, railroad executives renamed the settlement Casa Grande, after the Hohokam ruins at the nearby Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. Casa Grande grew slowly, and suffered several setbacks both in 1886 and 1893, when fires ravaged the town, destroying all wooden housing structures within it. When the mining boom slowed in the 1890s, the town was nearly abandoned, but with the advent of agriculture, the town remained alive and well, and was eventually incorporated in 1915.
According to historian David Leighton, during World War II, from 1942 to 1945, a Japanese-American relocation camp was set up outside of Casa Grande, known as the Gila River War Relocation Center. Two notable people that were interned there were future actor Pat Morita and baseball player Kenichi Zenimura, who constructed a baseball field and set up a league in the relocation camp.
