And we have already pointed out a few others as well, such as location, accreditation and reputation. To help you address those issues and more, following is a list of questions you may wish to ask the colleges you are examining prior to making your ultimate selection.

Is the Criminal Justice Program Accredited? A large number of criminal justice schools have acquired one or more accreditations from national or regional agencies. Among the most respected is the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). Schools and programs that have been accredited by the ACJS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their course of instruction and teachers. It’s imperative to confirm that the degree program and school you enroll in are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization for a number of reasons. In addition to helping assure that you get a quality education, it will also help in acquiring student loans or financial aid, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Also, a number of Camden AL employers have a preference for graduates of colleges that are accredited with excellent reputations.

What is the Reputation of the College? As previously stated, in conjunction with accreditation the reputation of the school you attend is important also. It’s especially crucial if you are getting in the field with no relevant previous work history. Without any prior experience, Camden AL employers will be weighing the quality of your education as a key factor when going over your resume. There are a number of school rating organizations where you can obtain school rankings and reviews, including U.S. News and World Report. They evaluate the quality of the core curriculum, the reputation of the instructors and other factors contributing to the educational programs. Keep in mind that a school with an overall less than outstanding reputation might still be well regarded for a specific degree program that you may be interested in.

A high placement rate will not only help validate that the college has a good reputation within the field, but that it also has a considerable network of employers to assist students obtain positions upon graduation.

How Far Away are the Colleges Located? As we mentioned at the opening of this article, one of the first things you will probably consider when looking for criminal justice colleges is the location of the schools. Unless you have decided that you will move or perhaps board on campus, the school you choose will need to be within driving distance of your Camden AL residence. Naturally attending online classes will eliminate the need for travel and make location a moot issue. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to attend a school outside of your state of residence, you might be required to pay a higher tuition than resident students, particularly for state universities and colleges. Community colleges also often charge students higher fees if they reside outside of the school district or state.

How Big are the Classes? Unless you prefer to get lost in the crowd, attending small classes offers the possibility for more interaction with the teachers. Large classes provide little chance of getting personalized instruction if needed. One method to assess the interaction between faculty and students is to sit in on a few classes prior to making your ultimate decision. Speak with several of the students and ask what their experiences have been. Also, talk to the instructors and inquire what their teaching approaches are. You might also want to ask what their backgrounds have been in the Alabama criminal justice profession.

Are Class Times Available as Needed? Finally, it’s important to verify that the final school you select provides classes at times that will accommodate your hectic schedule. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while going to school. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Camden AL, check that they are available at those times. Also, if you can only attend part-time, make sure it is an option also. And find out what the make-up protocol is in case you have to miss any classes due to illness or emergencies.
